Crop Insurance Questions To Ask Before February 28, 2016

Any and all new growers, entities, and any changes to crop insurance have to be made prior to February 28, 2016, for the traditional spring-planted crops. Nearly everyone should be looking at their insured yields as well as coverage options to determine how to purchase the most coverage for the cheapest premium.

The following are some questions to ask and review with your crop insurance agent to determine if similar coverage can be purchased for a lower price:

  1. Can Enterprise Units benefit me?
  2. Do I qualify for a trend-adjusted yield?
  3. Can I elect an APH yield exclusion to delete a poor year in calculating my APH?
  4. How much will my premium increase or decrease by increasing or decreasing my one level up or down?
  5. Should I purchase or delete SCO or STAX coverage on my cotton acres?
  6. If some of my acres are irrigated, should I purchase different coverage levels for my irrigated and dryland acres?

Most all crop insurance agents are willing to help you review these questions. Of course, they will be extremely busy over the month of February and the sooner you can get with them, the more time you will have to explore your options.
